Oh things have changed. I had my 1 hour glucose test right before Thanksgiving and then received the unfortunately news that I failed the test. This required that I take another glucose test, this time over a 3 hour time period. I was completely dreading this and put it off for almost 2 weeks. Having to deal with this couldn't have been at a worse time…the holidays!! I was only 19/20 weeks and didn't want to have to deal with this. I was being stubborn and brushing it off like "Oh that can't happen to me". Well the 3 hour test confirmed it, I have Gestational Diabetes! You can read all about what that means here.
So what now? Well I had an appointment with a Diabetic counselor, who provided me with a blood sugar monitor and a eating plan. Pretty basic. I have to keep my carbohydrate intake fairly low and test my blood sugar levels 4 times a day. I need to start exercising and trying to reduce my stress, yeah like that is going to be easy. If I can keep my numbers within the specified range, I shouldn't have any complications. I don't need to run through them all here…but they can be pretty bad if you don’t control your blood sugar levels.
So for the next 5 months I will be checking my blood daily and trying to eat healthy and get some exercise. So much for being the pregnant lady who gets to eat whatever she wants :(
